This is an annual Internet-based creative writing project that occurs in November. The challenge is to write 50,000 words (or more, if desired) of a novel in 30 days. NaNoWriMo started in 1999, making this the 20th year. Participation is free and the website offers a word counter and progress tracker, as well as other supports, including prep workshops, pep-talks by authors, rewards or badges for various accomplishments, and opportunities to connect with other participants online and in person. Regional groups of Wrimos hold write-ins and sprints during the month and sometimes throughout the year. Other additional writing challenges are offered in Camp NaNoWriMo, held in April and July.
